Betty Ione Gelback, Age 89

on Friday, 19 May 2017. Posted in Obituaries

Betty Ione Gelback, 89, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, May 18 surrounded by her loving family.

She was the beloved wife of the late Gunnery Sergeant, John Gelback Jr.. The two were married on September 14, 1946, and were happily married for 40 years until John’s passing in 1986.

Betty was born in Loogootee, Indiana, on August 12, 1927, to Aden and Bonnie Brosman. She became a Christian in her mid-20s, and had a heart for children’s ministry and evangelism. She taught children’s Sunday School for well over 50 years, retiring just a few years ago.

She was an active member of Sunnyside Assembly of God in Jeffersonville where she volunteered weekly in the Food Pantry. Betty truly loved the Lord, and she led countless people to Christ throughout the years.

In addition to being a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, “Grandma Betty,” as she was affectionately known, was always on the move. Never one to sit on the sidelines, she played basketball and kickball with her grandchildren well into her 70s, and participated in spirited croquet tournaments during family cookouts. Betty also loved to dance, and did so at every opportunity. She especially enjoyed doing the Jitterbug, and could easily outdance anyone on the dance floor.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, John Gelback, parents, Aden and Bonnie Brosman, brother, Gilbert Brosman, and sister, Viola Brosman.

She is survived by her three sons, John Gelback (Elinda), Mark Gelback (Doris), Tim Gelback (Kathy). Two brothers, Melvin Brosman (Ruth Ann) and Terry Brosman (Nancy). One sister, Wilma Hayes (Marvin).  Six grandchildren, Bob Gelback, Jason Geary (Mandi), Michelle Smith (Nathan), Matt Gelback, Brittany Weddington (Brad), and Christy Gelback-Diaz (Rafael). Eight great grandchildren, Daisy, JT, Noah, Julien, Addison, Kaila, Sofia, and Aleksandar.

She was well-loved by her family and many friends, and has left a legacy of love and faith that will carry on to future generations. Betty’s life story could easily fill many books, but if there is one verse that could summarize her amazing life, it would be this verse from 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Sunnyside Assembly of God, 3200 Holman’s Lane, Jeffersonville, Indiana, 47130.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at E.M. Coots’ Sons Funeral Home with burial to follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 service at the funeral home.
