John Hughes 1 1

John Hinton Hughes, 64, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.

John was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana to George and Jo Hughes on May 15, 1954. He attended Providence High School. He married Mary Beth Hughes whom he lovingly referred to as “M” on April 19, 1980 in Jeffersonville. John was an owner of Hughes Group Inc. and knew he wanted to be involved in the heavy highway business from a young age as he loved heavy equipment and “playing in the dirt.” He served as the Vice President of Hughes Group Inc., held various positions in Hughes Group’s subsidiary Companies, was the President of Kentuckiana Associated Builders and Contractors, and many other boards and associations. One of his proudest accomplishments was the residential community of Quarry Bluff in Utica Indiana where his home was, and for which he was the visionary.

John loved spending time with family and friends, going out to dinner, treasure hunting, traveling, reading, boats, deep sea fishing, and the ocean. He spent much of his time in Delray Beach, Florida and visited more than 150 islands in the Bahamas in his lifetime. He had a contagious enthusiasm for all things that he loved, and was very proud of watching his grandchildren grow up.

John was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2002, and quickly became an advocate and mentor for others who were facing the same diagnosis. He lived a full life while simultaneously fighting the battle with his health.

John is preceded in death by his father George Hughes Sr.; father-in-law Gus M. Vissing; niece Julia Vissing.

John is survived by his wife of 38 years and best friend Mary Beth Hughes; Five daughters Jamie (Jeff) Tretter, Joell (Dave) Robbins, Sally A. Hughes, Caroline (Rob) O’Mara, and Lauren (Mitch) Koetter; brothers George Hughes Jr. (Elizabeth), Jeff Hughes (Hawley) , and Jim Hughes (Larissa); sisters Kathy (Bob) Snelling, Susan Hughes, Cindy Hughes, Ann (Dale) Hughes; mother Josephine Hughes; mother-in-law Ann Vissing; grandchildren Lizzie Tretter, Katie Tretter, Lilly Robbins, Grace Robbins, Jonathon Robbins, and Hannah Detenber.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at St. Augustine Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. with celebration of life at Quarry Bluff Clubhouse beginning at noon. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 2-8:00 p.m. at E.M. Coots’ Sons Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Mayo Clinic, or H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center.

John’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to (Dr. David Britt, Dr. Robert McWilliams, Dr. David Nagorney, Dr. Daniel Anaya, Dr. H. Lee Moffitt, and all of the nurses that touched his life at Mayo Clinic and The Moffitt Cancer Center floor 4 south.

Mary Beth and family -- I am so sorry to hear about John's but am very aware of the gift the past sixteen years have been. As John experiences the full measure of God's love for him may you be comforted by the love you have shared. May God ease your sorrow and deepen your hope in everlasting life. Love, Fr. Jim
