It was my great good luck to grow up next to the Lynch family. Mrs. Lynch was always a kind presence in my life, but also a source of gentle discipline. It was a time when responsibility for raising children was collective and shared by neighbors. Mrs. Lynch was sort of old-fashioned even by those standards. I remember that she would sit us down when we were kids (this was in the 1960's), have us read the "Goofus and Gallant" feature in Highlights Magazine and then ask questions to make sure we had absorbed the moral lesson. I'm sure I snickered at the time, but in retrospect I'm grateful and I realize how utterly free she was of cynicism. She looked out for us. She was a lady of sterling qualities and I will always be grateful to her.
